FNA, submandibular gland: Prepared 1 slide using thin prep monolayer technique and 1 slide using cellient cell block procudure. Would use code CPT 88173, 88305 or 88112, 88305. Any help appreciated. AB
you can code the 88173 if an fna was performed and documented along with the cellblock which is an 88305. do not code 88112 with 88173.
it‘s never appropriate to report code 88108 (cytospin or other concentrated smear) or 88112 (liquid-based enriched/concentrated smear) together with code 88173 for the same fine needle aspirate specimen. This prohibition doesn‘t extend to a cell block preparation, which is separately billable from 88173 using 88305 (see section 8.4 below).

FNA (88173) is coded based on how specimen is obtained. All smears/slides are bundled with 88173. Fine Needle Aspiration should be clearly documented in report to support 88173.
