I recently started working for a mental health group that has several free standing 24 hour evaluation and treatment (E&T) facilities POS 51. They have been billing office or other outpatient E&M codes, and I am looking for documentation to support billing in-patient hospital codes 99221-99239. I tried billing a 99223 and it was paid by Medicare. They could not direct me to specific guidelines, and I have not been able to locate them. I did find a United HealthCare document on line that listed POS 51 as acceptable for the hospital codes, but not the office visit codes. Medicare has paid claims both ways.
