The scenario is this: A patient comes into the ED at around 11:30 pm on 10/1. A physician sees the patient right away. The examination, H&P, etc. takes about an hour. The physician enters and signs the order to admit the patient at 12:45 am on 10/2. For billing purposes, the date of service for the hospital admission billed by the physician 10/1 or 10/2? My instinct says 10/1 since that's when the service was initiated but the billers are using 10/2 because that is the only date they see on the order and H&P.
