A PCP sends a sick patient to the hospital. The patient requires ICU admission. The hospital has an intensivist program in place, and the patient is admitted to the intensivist. The PCP cannot come in and do a daily visit/bill for this patient. Can the PCP do a primary care consultation to assist the intensivist with background information and historical perspective, and bill for that single consult?

Why can't the PCP do a daily visit?

The PCP is a different specialty and can certainly perform an independent E/M service if medically necessary.

That being said, if the intensivist requests a consultation to get advice on management of conditions the PCP is familiar with, then, yes, you might have a consultation.
