One of my doctors wants to bill for his use of kinesio tape. I am of the opinion that he would do so by billing the strapping codes. But, he believes that he can also be reimbursed for the tape, itself.

The company's website is at:

Any thoughts on this would be helpful!!

To find out what the appropriate code would be for the kinesio tape or if there is a code for kinesio tape contact the manufactorer and ask for the code. Then for additional documentation ask for the PDAC letter supporting the code.

All the strapping codes start at 29200 and 29520. Pick the code that best reflexs the area being strapped! This code is payable by most insurance companies.

Most commercial insurance companies consider taping and strapping content of service in and E/M or other procedure in billed.

You can get reimbursed for the strapping just like any other procedure with a 25 on the E&M and a procedure note and of course medical necessity. However the question was how to be reimbursed for the tape itself. For that you will need a couple of things, first as pointed out the appropriate HCPCS II code for the tape and second a DME number for billing it as a DME. That in and of itself is a process! And there is no guarantee you will be granted one. Also if you do get one, then there is no guarantee you will be paid for the tape or if they will bundle it with the procedure. But there you are that is what wll need to be done.
