If I have a locum (covering for a vactioning doctor) and a regular doctor, and the regular doctor calls in sick, if the nurse does a visit do I put Q6 on the nurse visit since the incident too is the locum now?

Can coding get anymore confusing????/:eek:

The Q6 modifier is only used for the Locum - it would not apply to a nurse visit. I'm not sure about incident to billing, but I know that modifier is only applicable to the Locum doctor.

Hope this helps!

I agree with the poster above.

That modifier I can never forget coz it came up in the exam. When I look it up, I was like what is a locum tenens? So I look it up the second i get home.

Anyway, please do take not of this:

This applies to Medicare medical billing claims only, but in a nutshell when one of your staff physicians takes a leave of absence for any reason and a substitute physician fills in, you need to add the Q6 modifier to Medicare claims the sub handles if you want to ensure reimbursement for the services that the sub provides.

So if it its not a Medicare claim, I doubt you need that modifier.
