Does anyone know what cpt code/mod to use for a phone session done by an lpc or lcsw? Or is this the regular follow up 90834 with the description showing phone session. Thanks!

90834 is a face to face service code. You cannot use this code for a service provided over the phone. this definition is in your CPT book. there are phone call codes in the book, however they are used only when the patient calls the provider.

The phone call codes for non physician are not an item that is usually expected to be paid for by the payer. These usually wind up to be patient responsibility. However you do need to meet the criteria to bill these codes. That is they must be a call that the patient initiates, not a scheduled phone visit. The patient cannot have been in the office for the same reason in the past 7 days, if the phone call results in the patient needing to come into the office within the next few days or next available urgent time you cannot bill it. And so on .. Again these rules are stated in the CPT book.
