Normally, when a patient comes in for their scheduled Depo Injection, they only see the MA, so no E/M code is billed.

If the patient missed their scheduled Depo Injection, they sit with the provider to discuss why it is important to adhere to their scheduled due-date and what barriers they are having with keeping the schedule.
For these visits, we do bill an E/M, but rather than simply using Z32.42 (surveillance of injectable contraceptive) I wonder if it would be appropriate to use a noncompliance code, like Z91.138 (Patient's unintentional underdosing of medication regiment for other reason) or maybe Z91.19 (Patient's noncompliance with other medical treatment and regimen). That way the payer does not deny the E/M code as included in the injection, 96372, that the patient may get at the end of the visit.

Does anyone have any experience with this situation? Thank you!
