You must meet the following qualifications:
*Experience: At least 5 years in an Outpatient setting OR 2 years at an MTF **Experience in the business office (insurance billing, accounts receivable) is not a qualifying facility.** *Education/Certification:
1. Associate's degree in Health Information Management -OR- University Certificate in Medical Coding -OR- at least 20 quarter or 30 semester hours of college credit including relevant course work such as anatomy.physiology, medical terminology, health information management and/or pharmacology.
2. Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Professional Coder (CPC) and/or CCS-P (Certified Coder Specialist – Physician (CCS-P)) with the appropriate level of experience.
3. An accrediting institution recognized by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and/or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) must accredit education.
4. CONTINUED EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Contract medical coders will obtain the required continued education hours at no expense to the government in order to maintain current and proper national certification(s) required for the position.
5. BLS- (Sterling Medical will assist in obtaining the BLS certification)
*Knowledge/Skills: Excellent computer/communication skills for provider and staff interactions, Knowledge of anatomy/physiology and disease process, medical terminology, coding guidelines (outpatient), documentation requirements, familiarity with medications and reimbursement guidelines; and encoder experience, and the ability to handle multiple projects and appropriately prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
