Hello everyone,
We are looking at a potential new opportunity to do coding and billing for Anesthesiology. This is brand new territory for me and my group. What codes should we start with first to find coverage, eligibility and benefits. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Hi there,

I would start with the payment guidelines because they are unique. For example, check section 50 in CMS 100-04, Chapter 12 https://www.cms.gov/Regulations-and-Guidance/Guidance/Manuals/Downloads/clm104c12.pdf. This policy from UHC is an example of private payer policy https://www.uhcprovider.com/content...comm-reimbursement/COMM-Anesthesia-Policy.pdf.

You also should read the guidelines for the anesthesia chapter in your CPT manual and chapter 2 of the Correct Coding Initiative manual.

Make sure you understand how time, base units, medical supervision for anesthesia services and the anesthesia-specific modifiers.

If you decide to go forward you will need to buy a Crosswalk and a relative value guide, both from the American Society of Anesthesiologists: https://www.asahq.org/quality-and-practice-management/coding-billing-and-payment.
