Question: The patient had a routine cesarean section and tubal ligation. About 2.5 hours after the surgery, the doctor was called back in to see the patient. The patient had postpartum hemorrhaging. It was decided to transfer the patient out to another hospital. The doctor rode with the patient in the ambulance to the hospital. Is this a chargeable encounter, or would it be included in the global postoperative package since it all happened within 24 hours of the surgery? Can I bill EM and/or critical care time if the physician documents the total time spent with the patient? The patient was not taken back to surgery. The physician only controlled the bleeding before and during the transfer and patient was stable.
