Can you use modifier 59 on CPT codes 20552 and 20553 when injecting different areas, such as the neck region and low back region, on the same day. The auto companies are bundling the two injections into a single payment of 20553 (multiple muscle groups).

Hi Ann,
The auto company would be correct the CPT code 20553 is specific to " 3 or more muscles" .. trigger points..
it makes no difference where they're at... only that they gave more than the "one or two single or muliple trigger point injection(s)".. CPT code 20552

also, per NCCI Edits... tells you the same, you can not use both..."there are no circumstances in qhich a modifier would justify these codes being billed together" ..

Just as the original question on this thread, would it be appropriate to attach modifer 59 for CPT code 20600 Arthrocentesis, aspiration and or injection; small joint or bursa (finger, toes) if the physician injects 2 different medications in the toe joint with separate needles separate sites of same toe?
