Partial Colectomy x2

Can anyone give me some concrete information as to why 2 lap partial colectomies with anastomosis can not be billed together? CCI states 44207 and 44205 can not be billed even with a modifier. One was performed due to colon cancer and the second was performed due to obstruction. This was not a total colectomy.

Thanks for any help that can be provided,
Melissa

kinda of a no brainer. that is the way the codes are. if the surgeon doesn't agree they should lobby cms. they are always open to physician and clinic input( I think the organization groups have more weight). there are only total or partial colectomy codes. Unlike the small intestine which has add on codes for each additional resection and anastomosis.

the code 44204 does allow 2 units per the MEU edit. I would have to read the op note in order to tell if you only had 2 sections not including the additional descriptions that your code selection has, i.e. 44207 and 44205 . These codes include much more than just 2 sections. Re-read your descriptions.
