Does anyone have coding recommendations regarding the Perioperative/ preadmission testing for COVID19; And also if someone is symptomatic but tests negative, which codes would be assigned? This is for an inpatient setting at a hospital designated COVID19-Negative. Thanks!

The code assignment will of course depend on the documentation for the specific patient encounter. But if the patient has no symptoms and no history or suspicion of exposure to the disease is being tested solely as a precautionary measure prior to admission, then this is a screening test which would be coded with Z11.59 - Encounter for screening for other viral diseases. If the patient had symptoms but tested negative, as with any other encounter, you would code the diagnosis that was made for those symptoms, if documented, or if no definitive diagnosis was made then code the symptoms which were documented as the reason for the test.

So, you would not assign the Z01.812 indicating that this was a pre-procedural LAB and potentially inclusive to the surgery?
