Do you use the ICD-9 dx codes effective 10/1 or do you follow the date of service?

Example - I have a surgery date of service 9/18. Since it's alreday Oct should I defer to 2010 ICD-9 dx codes?

Thanks, just wanted a little clarification. :)

No, you use the ICD-9 codes that were in effect on the date of service.

This is why we always keep a few of the old ICD-9 books.
