I would like some advise on the following senario. All opinions appreciated.
History. Patient has severe osteoarthritis with avascular necorsis of the Femoral head.
Plan complete hip arthroplasty.
Primary surgeon with another orthopedist as assist
hip opened. femoral head removed. acetabulum drilled almost ready to place prosthesis. patients blood pressure drops drastically. Doctors discontinue procedure as is performed a code on the patient. Once the patient is stable transferred to ICU. eventually rescheduled for the remainder of the surgery later next month.
There is a code that describes what was complete it is 27122 and this code is suggested by the primary surgeon. However, I feel we should bill the complete arthroplasty with a 53 modifier and then bill the complete arthroplasty with a 52 when the patient returns for the remainer of the procedure as it is only half completed.
