Hi,

I was looking for some clarification on billing for 50590 Extracorpeal Shockwave Lithotripsy for multiple stones treated on the same side in the same session. We normally do the billing for both Professional and Technical charges. So my question is..
Are we able to bill for the 50590 for each stone treated on the same side or is there a modifier that will help with getting reimbursed for the treatment of multiple stones on the same side? Possibly modifier 22?

Thank you in advance for your help.

No, this code may only be billed once per kidney regardless of the number of stones. but if the documentation supports that the treatment of multiple stones involved significantly more time and/or physician work than the usual ESWL treatment, then yes, a modifier 22 may be appropriate.

I have one more part to my question what if we had one stone located in the kidney and one in another location like ureter/bladder (still same side). Would your answer still be the same?

Thank you for your help!
