Hi- A urologist has just joined our clinic- we have not ever coded urology before- we are having a hard time getting him to understand global periods, and for the sake of argument let me ask this question: if he performs an ESWL on a patient which has 90 day global and the patient returns within that time frame and he states it is a one-month follow-up, they xray and find some small renal and ureteral stones, would that be considered part of the global, or because there are some stones is it billable? What if the patient came back for a UTI within that time frame? We are thinking it's part of the global, but any or all advice would be greatly appreciated.

In my opinion, the kidney stones would be global unless the physician was discussing stones on the opposite side of treatment. The UTI could be arguable whether to be global or not.
