99358 is not an add-on code so you can report it on a separate date of service and by itself. Unlike face-to-face codes 99354 and 99354, 99358 can be billed provided you link the non-face-to-face care to a companion E/M code. 99358 can be reported for a patient where direct face-to-face patient care has occurred or will occur and be part of ongoing patient management.

Keep in mind that if you bill this code as a pre-cursor if the face-to-face visit gets canceled or does not occur that you may have to refund your payer.

If a physician does the NF2F review of notes, etc. and refers to a “companion” E&M, but the E&M is done by a different physician in the same practice, can she bill for the NF2F or does the “companion” E&M have to be her note?
