If your medical practice is hiring a new doctor, at what point do you start the credentialing process? Does he see no patients while waiting for the contract approvals, or does he see them for out-of-network reimbursement?

Credentialing

It depends on the insurance, but in the past, we have had the physician see patients and bill "incident-to" one of the physicians that is credentialed (supervising physician would review and sign off on the charts). You should check with each of your carriers, but Medicare will back date the enrollment no more than 30 days from the time they receive the enrollment and all attachments if it's approved. Hope this helps!

Start as soon as the offer letter goes out

We start our credentialing process the minute the offer letter goes out to the new physician. We include a list of licenses, documents that will be needed for credentialing and require that all that information be sent to us immediately.

We do not allow physicians to see patients (for billing purposes) until they are credentialed.
