Highmark: Standby for MPFS Correction
Highmark Medicare Services recently announced that Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) amounts are currently unavailable on its Web site because the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is expected to issue a correction.

NGS: Dec. 14 will be a Dark Day
National Government Services (NGS) will be merging four regions (Connecticut, Upstate New York, Queens County, and Downstate New York) into a single claims processing environment beginning Dec. 12. According to NGS, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has approved a “Dark Day” on Dec. 14 to allow NGS to execute the merge. This will affect all providers who submit claims to the jurisdiction 13 (J13) Part B Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC).

RHCs and FQHCs Get a Rate Increase
Medicare rural health centers (RHCs) and federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) can expect to see payment updates in 2010 thanks to an increase in the Medicare Economic Index (MEI), according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

CMS Extends ESRD PPS Proposed Rule Comment Period
End-stage renal disease (ESRD) facilities concerned about a proposed ESRD prospective payment system (PPS) that would replace the current payment system and methodologies still have time to stand up and be heard. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has extended the comment period out by 30 days.

Health insurers will soon have a new, independent database to use for determining out-of-network payment rates for physicians. Not-for-profit company FAIR Health Inc. and an Upstate New York research network headquartered at Syracuse University are charged with the task of developing the new database.

Study Promotes EHR Use, Physicians Remain Wary
A recent RAND Corporation study provides another incentive for physicians to implement electronic health care records (EHRs) — in addition to that really good one that mandates EHR meaningful use by 2014. According to the study, dedicated EHR use improves quality of care for patients and facilitates quality reporting for physicians. This, in turn, ensures eligible professionals (EPs) receive the full Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI) incentive. An Ingenix survey, however, says many physicians remain skeptical that the benefits would outweigh the cost of implementing an EHR system.
