It’s Official: CMS Says Consult Codes are History
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services communicated to Medicare carriers yesterday that consultation codes (99241-99245 and 99251-99255) have been removed from the Medicare Claims Processing Manual. Effective, Jan. 1, 2010, consult codes will no longer be recognized for Medicare Part B payment.

NAS: 2010 MPFS Now Available
Noridian Administrative Services (NAS) announced Dec. 8 that the 2010 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) amounts are now available.

United Healthcare Requires Radiology Notification
United Healthcare recently announced an important policy change whereas all network physicians will be required to participate in the health plan’s Radiology Notification Program, effective Feb. 15, 2010.

States Receive Funding for EHR Incentives
To promote health information technology (HIT) infrastructure, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced Dec. 9 several states that will receive federal matching funds for planning activities necessary to implement the electronic health records (EHR) incentive program established by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act).

January 2010 ASC Payment System Update
New HCPCS Level II codes have been created for reporting specific drugs and biologicals in 2010. Twenty-three of the new codes are separately payable to ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs) for service dates on or after Jan. 1, 2010. In addition, 2009 payment rates for six HCPCS Level II codes have been corrected.

2010 Ambulance Inflation Factor Set
Providers and suppliers of ambulance services can expect a zero percent inflation adjustment in their 2010 Medicare reimbursements, compared to 0.5 percent in 2009.

Physicians and staff should take note of the most recent quarterly updates to Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) edits. Version 16.0, released Nov. 20 by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), goes into effect Jan. 1, 2010.

OIG Reports $20.97B in Savings and Recoveries in 2009
In its Semiannual Report to Congress, the Office of Inspector General (OIG) announced Dec. 3 a reported savings and expected recoveries of $20.97 billion for 2009 as a result of audits, investigations, and evaluations the agency conducted this year.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is preparing to conduct the fifth annual Medicare Contractor Provider Satisfaction Survey (MCPSS). This survey offers Medicare fee-for-service (FFS) providers and suppliers an opportunity to give CMS feedback on their interactions with Medicare FFS contractors related to seven key business functions: Provider Inquiries, Provider Outreach & Education, Claims Processing, Appeals, Provider Enrollment, Medical Review, and Provider Audit & Reimbursement.
