5010 Enforcement Discretion Extended Thru June 30

The enforcement discretion period the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) gave providers and payers to fully adopt the ASC X12 Version 5010 claim reporting standards is extended through June 30, the agency announced in a March 15 press release. This means CMS will not initiate enforcement action for an additional three months.

Health Care Job Opportunities Rise

According to data released on March 9 from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, health care gained 49,000 jobs in February. Over the past 12 months, the total increase for health care employment has been 360,000.

Medicare Redesigns MSN

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced March 7 that it has redesigned its Medicare Summary Notice (MSN). This statement informs Medicare beneficiaries about their claims for Medicare services and benefits. The new MSN is now available online at MyMedicare.gov and will be mailed quarterly to beneficiaries starting in 2013.

March 28 Nat'l Provider Call: Initial Exam and AWV

A national provider call offered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) March 28 will help answer providers' questions about the Welcome to Medicare preventive visit (also known as the Initial Preventive Physical Exam (IPPE)) and the Annual Wellness Visit (AWV). Topics to be discussed include the Health Risk Assessment added to the AWV. The 90-minute call begins at 2:30 ET.

Avoid Error Code H40142 for Crossover Claims

There has reportedly been a high incidence of crossover claims being rejected. According to Palmetto GBA, many physician offices and durable medical equipment (DME) suppliers are receiving provider notification letters from their servicing Medicare administrative contractor (MAC) or carrier that includes an H40142 error code and the description "Discharge date (DTP-01=096) was not expected because this claim is not for inpatient services."

HHS: We Made Exchanges Easier for States

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) released March 12 a final rule outlining Affordable Health Insurance Exchanges (Exchanges) and their operation. The rule reflects an easier process of implementation than expected by states when health care reform laws were signed in 2010.
