Due to the delay, will there be any change to the deadline in the implementation of the ICD-10-CM proficiency assessment?

  • Yes, AAPC has extended the date to demonstrate ICD-10-CM proficiency to December 31, 2015.
  • If you have already taken and passed your ICD-10-CM proficiency assessment either by online course or the timed assessment there are no additional steps needed and you have demonstrated adequate proficiency.
  • We encourage those who have access to the online code set training to revisit exercises.

Why should I prepare for ICD-10 implementation now, given the delay?

  • You’ll need the additional time to work on documentation with your doctors
  • Time, money budgeted/allocated
  • If you’re not prepared, you put the revenue of your organization at risk
  • Investment in learning ICD-10 makes you a stronger coder

When will ICD-10 be incorporated into AAPC certification exams?

  • ICD-10 will be included on certification exams beginning January 1, 2016.

How is AAPC helping me with training?

  • AAPC has extended access for all ICD-10 courses through December 31, 2015
  • AAPC will begin offering free monthly webinars this November for anyone purchasing and receiving an AAPC delivered ICD-10-CM boot camp, or ICD-10-CM/PCS online training course by September 30, 2014

Can I just learn ICD-10 instead of ICD-9?

  • We strongly advise against this approach
  • ICD-9 is the primary code set that will be used through December 31, 2015 and will continue to be used for several years following implementation (workers comp, and other non-HIPAA covered entities)

Should we wait until ICD-11 or just move forward with ICD-10?

  • We currently only have a draft of ICD-11 for 2017 – we then have to make a modification (CM).
  • The soonest we can expect ICD-11 is 2020 or 2025
