Position Summary:

The Assistant Vice President, Physician Practice Coding Operations is a key member of the HCA Physician Services Group (PSG) Executive team and PSG Coding Operations/Health Information Management (HIM), strategic direction and administrative leadership, operational excellence, and business plan success.


This position reports directly to the CFO of PSG Practice Operations and has 5 direct reports – all Directors leading Division Support (2), Central Coding, Health Information Management, and Coding Operations Education).


The Assistant Vice President, Physician Practice Coding Operations provides subject matter expertise in coding system workflow and overall operational direction/oversight for coding and HIM specific activities with PSG. This person serves as a key promoter of Coding Operations and is responsible for setting the tone of Coding Operations as a service organization, continuously seeking to understand, meet, and exceed customer expectations and needs.


The Assistant Vice President, Physician Practice Coding Operations is expected to interact with other company executives at the Practice, Market, Division, Group, and Corporate level and drive positive outcomes on PSG’s financial and operations performance.


The Assistant Vice President, Physician Practice Coding Operations directs any practice acquisition coding activities and ongoing operational development/enhancement supporting PSG coding systems, processes and infrastructure.


Responsibilities also include oversight and expertise in driving information technology projects related to coding/HIM and furthering integration activities.


Overall responsibilities include development and oversight of PSG Coding Operations/HIM operational plans, service level agreements, budgets, coding systems/processes and internal controls. Ensures that PSG Coding Ops, as a PSG service department, and the stakeholders it serves, actively engage in continuous improvement activities to enhance performance and PSG contribution and ultimately responsible for PSG Coding Ops/HIM compliance and quality standards.


Duties include but not limited to:

  • Motivating and influencing disparate teams to embrace new practices that enhance coding operations.
  • Assumes a lead role for innovation, knowledge sharing, and leading practices identification within PSG and among peer group
  • Oversees PSG Coding Operations/HIM functions, ensuring timeliness, accuracy, compliance and standards fulfillment as defined by PSG Standards
  • Contributes to the development of strategic direction of Coding Operations/HIM
  • Communicates routinely to Practice, Division, Group, and Corporate leadership significant coding/HIM issues, status of projects, barriers, and successes
  • Actively monitors Coding Operations/HIM process and performance
  • Manages Practice, Division, Group, and Corporate customer relations
  • Evaluates monthly trending analysis of PSG Coding Operations performance by reviewing operational metrics, including weekly and monthly reports
  • Directs and motivates the Coding Operations management team and performance of coding staff
  • Develops strategy, specific goals, objectives, budgets, and performance standards for Coding Operations/HIM
  • Oversees the budget process, including monthly reporting, planning and forecasting
  • Follows overall market trends and communicates trends to PSG executive team and others as appropriate
  • Provide operational support through the practice acquisition and divestiture process, as applicable
  • Identifies and implements process improvements to lower costs and improve service to PSG practice customers
  • Monitors performance and communicates with Information Technology management to ensure optimal use of installed technology and identify future needs
  • Develops and implements risk management processes for the Coding Operations/HIM in line with corporate and PSG directives
  • Performs staff reviews and prepares performance documents for direct reports
  • Practices and adheres to the “Code of Conduct” philosophy and “Mission and Value Statement”
  • Maintains the strictest confidentiality in the areas of patient, employee, and physician relations
  • Practices and adheres to the “Code of Conduct” philosophy and “Mission and Value Statement”
  • Acts as a patient advocate to facilitate improved patient outcomes
  • Performs related work and additional duties as requested by supervisor
