Under limited supervision, uses intermediate skills obtained through experience and training to bill third party insurance companies and patients for medical services received. Bills claims, posts charges and payments, verifies insurance coverage, and follows up on rejected or unpaid claims. Regularly assists patients and staff with billing questions and concerns providing professional, efficient, and customer focused service in support of the “Care, No Matter What” mission.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform insurance eligibility, benefit verification and pre-authorization.
Enter charges from health centers for all PPMI reproductive health care services.
Process and submit medical claims to third party insurance carriers either electronically or on paper.
Monitor claims for missing information, authorization, coding and other errors.
Resolve edits and unpaid claims.
Process rejected claims by correcting billing errors and re-submitting claims to third party payers in a timely fashion.
Follow up on delinquent billings with patients and third party payers.
Post payments and adjustments for third party and self-pay patient accounts.
Answer billing phone line, monitor voice mail, and assist staff and patients with questions.
Educate clients about services, funding sources and fees.
Maintain remittance advice records for all third party payers.
Resolve credit balances and process patient refunds in a timely fashion according to departmental policy.
Process bad debt write-offs according to departmental policy.
Monitor, troubleshoot, and suggest system improvements related to Practice Management system and clearinghouse software.
Review and update CPT & ICD 10 codes and encounter forms as needed.
Maintain currency in effective billing and collection processes and procedures.
Operate standard office equipment and uses required software applications.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of insurance billing and collections.
ICD 10 and CPT coding.
Explanation of Benefit statements.
Commercial and Medicaid insurance plan formats and operations.
HIPAA regulations.
Operating standard office equipment and using required software applications, including Microsoft Office products, practice management and electronic medical record applications, clearinghouse systems, and payer websites.
Maintain confidentiality and exercise sensitivity and a nonjudgmental manner in dealing with sexuality and sensitive client issues.
Maintain and adhere to all OSHA, HIPAA and PPMI policies and guidelines.
Partner with other functional areas to accomplish objectives.
Read, interpret, analyze and apply information from billing systems.
Organize, manage and track multiple detailed tasks and assignments with frequently changing priorities in a fast-paced work environment.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
Handle stressful situations and provide a high level of customer service in a calm and professional manner.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels of the organization.

Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:

Minimum Degree Required:
High School Diploma
At least three years of working experience in a health care billing/collections department. Any equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training approved by Human Resources.
Previous experience with billing Blue Cross Blue Shield as preferred.
