Function:

Reporting to the Director of Medical Operations, the Clinical Documentation Specialist will serve as the primary coding and documentation specialist within the Medical Department. The Clinical Documentation Specialist will audit coding and documentation for accuracy and appropriateness, serve as a coding and documentation educational resource for providers and medical staff, and contribute to continuous improvement activities associated with clinical documentation.


Representative Duties:

  • Educate providers and medical staff in coding and documentation best practices (thorough documentation, coding completeness)
  • Provide expertise in complete coding, documentation, acuity, risk adjustment and denials
  • Query providers for missing or unclear documentation
  • Conduct coding and documentation audits quarterly -- analyze audit results to identify areas of opportunity
  • Assist in implementation of solutions to optimize coding and documentation practices
  • Develop and maintain training materials, including onboarding and ongoing education materials
  • Conduct one-on-one and group educational/training sessions
  • Collaborate with Fenway’s MassHealth and BIDCO Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) to monitor performance and identify areas of opportunity
  • Work with management to prepare data reports to evaluate effectiveness of our clinical documentation education program


Requirements:

A broad knowledge of the disease process, normal/abnormal findings, reasonable course of treatment, quality measures and risk management issues

  • 5 years of experience as a documentation/coding specialist
  • One of the following required: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
  • Ability to work independently and effectively prioritize work assignments
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Experience working with an ethnically, culturally, and racially diverse work staff preferred
  • Ability to work harmoniously with diverse groups of individuals required

Physical Requirements:

Ability to meet the following physical requirements with or without reasonable accommodations:

  • Sit at a computer station for extended periods of time
  • Ability to keyboard for extended periods of time
  • Travel to multiple sites within the city of Boston
