Purpose of Job
This position provides coding education to medical staff and others regarding documentation, reimbursement and data interpretation for coded data. Provides one-on-one as well as classroom WebEx and written education. Acts as a coding expert. Conducts the quality review of coding, recommends coding guidelines and coding policy changes. Develops process improvement activities.
1.Analyzes and evaluates clinical and operational systems relative to chart review and other study methods.
2.Makes recommendations for data quality improvements and revenue enhancements. Monitors coding compliance via pre-billing coding, compliance software reviews and through other methods.
3.Provides feedback to the medical staff and management team regarding and ICD-10 coding assignment and related clinical documentation.
4.Assists with and/or provides suggestions for continuing education topics and issues for coding staff.
5.Educates groups and individuals regarding coding and the reimbursement process.
6.Interacts and educates medical and coding staff.
7.Supports coding program initiatives.
8.Acts as a liaison among all departments with respect to coding issues.
9.Anticipates and responds to changing skills requirements.
10.Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education/Work Experience/License/Certifications
•3 years of clinical coding experience including education of staff
•Detail oriented and analytical in nature
•Knowledge of coding principles (ICD-10/HCPCS)
•Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, disease processes, and pharmacology-drug names
•Knowledge of basic computer functions and Microsoft Office applications
•Ability to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions as mentioned above
•Associate's or Bachelor's degree
•Experience with chart auditing
•CPC, CCS, RHIT or other coding certification
