The Director of Physician Billing Coding directs a section with approximately $2 million in combined salaries and approximately $2 million in operating budget at Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH). Directs the workflow and activities for HMH coding across the physician division as part of Health Information Management (HIM). Consists of over 100 practices and ambulatory facilities. Responsible for ensuring compliance with all governmental regulatory agencies (i.e. The Joint Commission (JCAHO), New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) as it relates to PB and specialty Coding. Promotes and ensures the quality of coded and billed data by directing a staff of approximately 20 team members as well as various contracted companies/vendors. Under the direction of this position, the specialty Coding staff reviews, interprets, codes and abstracts medical records information according to standard classification systems. Positions that report to this role include but are not limited to: Coding Education Manager, Coding Manager, and approximately 16 other indirect reports.


A day in the life of the Director of Physician Billing Coding at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Ensure the Specialty and/or PB Coding section of HIM maintains optimal knowledge of International Classification of Diseases (ICD10) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) classifications.
  • Ensure the Specialty and PB Coding section of HIM has extensive knowledge of clinical documentation to help ensure the use of proper diagnostic and procedure code assignments.
  • Monitor coding work and trends to ensure continuous process improvement.
  • Direct the appropriate clinical and coding decisions for assigned denial work queues.
  • Ensure the quality and compliance monitoring audits and education for domestic and offshore vendor coding.
  • Ensure and direct the monitoring of the appropriate dashboard Reports and efforts to reduce outstanding items attributable to Specialty and/or PB Coding.
  • Ensure and direct the analysis of physician documentation in the medical records for coding completeness and compliance.
  • Ensure the existence of processes to respond, identify and resolve inquiries/issues from other departments related to Specialty and/or PB coding, denials, and appeals.
  • Collaborates with Clinical data management (CDM) Coordinator as well as Specialty and/or PB managers to ensure the CDM and charge tickets/superbills are updated in a timely manner.
  • Directs and oversees the daily operations of PB coding including but not limited to workload, staffing, hiring, training, performance evaluations and monitoring quality of work.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.


Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in health related field or Information Technology.
  • Minimum of 7+ years of experience with Physician billing & coding. 
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that may include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Epic Knowledge.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Certification in an Allied Health area.

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

  • Epic certification in Health Information modules.
