Position
Description:
• Incumbent
must possess current Certified Procedural Coder certification (CPC, CCS-P,
CCS-H, etc.) along with five years extensive surgical coding and experience
with high volume abstraction for in-patient and out-patient in Cardiac,
Thoracic, Vascular, General, Colon Rectal, Plastics and other surgical
sub-specialty practices.
•
Independently utilize professional coding skills and training to correctly
apply appropriate ICD10, CPT codes and modifiers to professional fee services
in multiple high volume surgical practices at multiple locations.
• Ensures
CPUP compliance on all billable professional services in office, out-patient
and in-patient locations.
• Applies
and correctly utilizes the National Correct Coding Guidelines, Code Check, HDM
or other coding software.
• Consults
with Department resources and Professional Fee Abstraction personnel to resolve
complex coding scenarios.
• Ability to
accurately and consistently interpret and readily explain coding policies.
• Provide
coding education to faculty and staff.
• Research,
interpret, analyze and apply Government, commercial insurance carrier and
medical authoritative committee policies to documentation and coding scenarios.
• Ensures
all regulatory requirements are met with regard to coding and documentation.
•
Performance will make a direct impact on Department of Surgery and Hospital of
University of PA reimbursement and reduction in bad debt.
• Candidate
must successfully pass a coding skills test by coding sample operative reports
at the time of formal interview regardless of coding certification.
Minimum
Requirements:
Five years
professional coding experience in Urology, GI Surgery and other surgical
sub-specialties. Requirements include a current Certified Procedural Coder
(CPC) certification. Demonstrated knowledge and application of ICD-9, ICD-10
and CPT coding required. Five to eight years healthcare experience and/or
education required. Customer Service experience is required. Bachelor’s degree in Health Information
Management or RN preferred.

and utilization of correct coding principles.
Demonstrated
ability to work in a team setting.
Working
knowledge of health care environments and Revenue Cycle goals for both
Physician Practice and Hospitals.
Knowledge of
third party insurers, government payers, physician billing and reimbursement
guidelines.
Demonstrated
knowledge and ability to understand, interpret and utilize ICD9 and CPT codes.
Excellent
verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to
learn, apply and utilize medical billing systems; IDX, SMS preferably
Basic
computer knowledge and analytical skills required.
