POSITION SUMMARY

The Lead Coder:

·        Provides day-to-day supervision of the Coders and teaches coding techniques to staff throughout Marshall Medical Center to ensure correct documentation for proper coding.

·        Codes and abstracts all patient types on a backup basis, reviewing and preparing reports to support the Coders completion of patient accounts.

·        Uses coded data to create and maintain department reports and complete special projects at the request of the Director.

·        Ensures that coding policies and procedures are updated and reviewed for approval.

·        The Lead Coder works effectively with the Health Information Management (HIM) clerical unit as well as the Transcription unit to ensure that transcribed medical reports are available for coding completion.


POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Licensure/ Certification/Requirements:

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • Associates Degree required; Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Current Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required.
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) certification preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of Outpatient coding experience required.
  • Minimum of two years of supervisory experience required.
  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology required.
  • Working knowledge of Windows and Office based products (Word, Excel, etc.) required.
Working knowledge of EPIC, 3M, Midas, OSHPD
