IMA Medical Group is seeking to hire a full-time In- House Coding Specialist.

This position comes with a typical schedule of 8:30 am - 5:30 pm, Monday-Friday. We pay our In-House Coding Specialist a competitive wage based on experience. SUMMARY: The Coding Specialist works collaboratively with physicians and their staff to review assigned medical records and other clinical documentation on a daily basis. Partner with providers to educate and guide them on proper coding and documentation according to CMS guidelines.


The main focus of this job is to conduct daily physician chart reviews to identify potentially incorrect coding, prepare reports of findings, recommend improvements, and report and assist with remediation of any compliance issues. The Coding Specialist interacts with physicians and office managers regarding coding, billing and documentation policies, procedures and actions related to conflicting/ambiguous or non-specific documentation. The Coding Specialist works to ensure that provider progress notes are coded accurately and to the maximum level of specificity following all established coding guidelines. The Coding Specialist will work directly with physicians to support and build strong documentation and coding compliance. This position requires Coding Specialist/Physician Educator to be in a medical clinic.




  • Ensures compliance with all applicable Federal, State and/or County laws and regulations related to coding and documentation guidelines. To include but not limited to review of the following: problem lists, patient medical history, physical exams, physician orders, progress notes, consultation reports, diagnostic reports, operative and pathology reports, and discharge summaries in order to verify/support all conditions.

  • Educate physicians and other clinicians by advocating proper documentation practices, further specificity, and sequencing or inclusion of diagnosis when needed to more accurately reflect the acuity, severity, and the occurrence of events.

  • Works to identify support for diagnosis codes through review of provider documentation and in adherence with the ICD-10-CM Guidelines for Coding and Reporting.

  • Reviews patient profiles to ensure that the diagnosis codes for each chronic or major medical condition are supported with documentation and submitted within the permitted timeframe.

  • Works to eliminate/delete any diagnosis code(s) that are unsubstantiated by medical record documentation..

  • Reviews for clinical indicators and queries providers to capture the severity of illness of the patient.

  • Orients new providers and monitors their documentation and self-coding until they meet quality standards.

  • Provides instruction to providers and staff in abstracting codes effectively from medical records to ensure quality and timely care of our members.

  • Communicates with physicians and office staff regarding risk adjustment guidelines and provides education on best practices for coding and documentation.

  • Meets productivity and accuracy standards.

  • Meets with partner providers to discuss audit findings.

  • Available to all provider partners for queries.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management

  • Coding Specialists are responsible for keeping their coder certification current and comply with CEU's requirements in accordance with the AAPC and/or AHIMA.




  • This job has no supervisory responsibilities.




  • Associates Degree or equivalent required, Bachelor's Degree preferred.

  • 5 years of experience in Medical Coding required.

  • 2+ years of Provider Education experience preferred

  • Certification required (CPC, CCS). CPMA preferred but does not replace CPC/CCS requirement.

  • Proficient in use of computer, including MS-Outlook, Word and Excel (Windows PC Applications)

  • Detail oriented and able to work efficiently.

  • Must be able to perform daily procedures, meeting high quality standards and using his/her independent judgment following standards and regulations.

  • Advanced knowledge of ICD-10.

  • Travel to other area clinics in the Central Florida area required.

  • Bilingual English/Spanish (conversational Spanish) is preferred but not required.

  • Strong written English is required
