Edmonds Community College has an immediate opening for a medical coding instructor. This is a part-time faculty position, teaching quarterly, online, medical coding courses with a weekly, on-campus skills lab. This position is supported by faculty training, development, and mentoring.

Medical Coding faculty members are responsible for the following:

  • Teaching ICD-10, CPT, and Advanced Coding courses in the Medical Billing and Coding Specialist Certificate program
  • Preparing students for AAPC’s CPC and AHIMA’s CCS-P certification exams 
  • Providing leadership to a diverse student body in both the online classroom and the campus-based skills lab
  • Developing curriculum
  • Preparing teaching materials
  • Developing and assessing student learning outcomes
  • Evaluating student work, assigning grades, maintaining required records
  • Supporting student success through consultation/mentoring


  • Current (plus at least three, previous, consecutive years’) full-time employment as a certified professional coder with AAPC’s CPC or AHIMA’s RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CCS-P credential
  • Excellent speaking, writing, listening, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of medical coding computer applications and ability to apply technology to coding curriculum
  • Ability to work effectively with supervisors, colleagues, staff, and students as part of an educational team
  • Ability to meet with students in the on-campus skills lab for 90-minutes one afternoon or evening per week during scheduled quarters


  • Demonstrated medical coding teaching or trainer experience
  • Five, previous, consecutive years’ full-time employment as a certified professional coder with AAPC’s CPC or AHIMA’s RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CCS-P credential
  • Demonstrated medical coding teaching or trainer experience
  • Current CPC-I certification or willingness and eligibility to become a CPC-I
  • Experience with multiple approaches to teaching and learning, such as incorporating a variety of technologies into the classroom, teaching online or hybrid classes, or using other innovative techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to a variety of teaching situations, including a wide range of student preparedness, backgrounds, and life experiences
  • Experience with educational technology and online teaching methods


Work is typically performed in a classroom, which requires standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time. Instructors typically use a computer in the work environment.


Salary is dependent upon contract load and mode of instruction. A standard five-credit “lecture mode” class would be approximately $4,260.07.

Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • All new positions are contingent upon funding.

  • This position is part of a bargaining unit subject to a collective bargaining agreement.
