Overview:  The Professional Coding and Billing Analyst is responsible for translating patient information into alphanumeric medical code into the patient’s chart.  The incumbent is responsible for assigning the correct code to describe the type of service a patient has received. The incumbent also ensures the codes are applied correctly during the medical billing process, which includes extracting the information from documentation, assigning the appropriate codes, and creating a claim to be paid by insurance carriers. It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure compliance with HIPAA/OSHA standards. They are required to know several different coding systems such as HCPCS and ICD 10.

  •  Code procedures and enter in patient charts.
  • Comply with medical coding guidelines and policies
  • Verifying and coding of the diagnosis, evaluation and management, procedures or other codes required for the completeness and accuracy of the record
  • Perform edit checks on data entered prior to transmittal and corrects errors as indicated.
  • Communicate with other clinical staff regarding documentation
  • Search for information in cases where the coding is complex or unusual
  • Know of insurance specific coding and billing rules and guidelines
  •  Submit claims to insurance carriers.
  • Follow up to see if a claim is accepted or denied. Resubmitting if it is denied.
  • Handle patient information about treatment, diagnosis, and related procedures.
  • Collect, post, and manage patient account payments.
