Modifier 59 being Replaced

  1. Default Modifier 59 being Replaced
    Medical Coding Books

Effective January 1, 2015 (Transmittal 1422 & Change Request 8863) CMS implemented four define new HCPCS modifiers in replace of modifier 59. They are as follows:

XE Separate Encounter- A service that is distinct because it occurred during a separate encounter

XS Separate Structure- A service that is distinct because it was performed on a separate organ/structure.

XP Separate Practitioner- A service that is distinct because it was performed by a different practitioner.

XU Unusual Non - Overlapping Service- The use of a service that is distinct because it does not overlap usual components of the main service.

I wanted to know if anyone knows of any upcoming webinar/seminars that would provide rationale for using each of these selected identifiable modifiers in case scenarios because it can appear to overlap with the other modifiers in Appendix A of the CPT manual.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
