Emergency room coding

    Medical Coding Books
    Patient has gout and come to ED with hand/leg etc.,pain and final diagnois is gout. Should I code gout unspec., or Acute gout? same scenerio with sickle cell also. Is it sickle cell disease or sickle cell with crisis.

    I'd code gout, unsp., 2749, with the info given in your post. I'd code sickle cell disease 282.60 for the second one.
