pancytopenia - ICD-10 Code for Other pancytopenia

  1. Default pancytopenia - ICD-10 Code for Other pancytopenia
    Medical Coding Books
    Fellow coders:

Provider lists neutropenic fever, anemia, and thrombocytopenia in his assessment list. Do I use the code for pancytopenia since all three are listed, or must "pancytopenia" also be documented by the provider in order to use it?

Patient is also undergoing chemotherapy but provider does not document a correlation there so I'm not using "drug-induced pancytopenia."

    Thanks for your input!

    Hi Brenda,
As you may already know, you really need to query/communicate with the provider to have him or her specify the anemia diagnosis. Including any relation to the chemo. Besides that, if it’s not documented I wouldn’t code it.
    Hope this is useful.

Thanks for your reply, Mark. I also stumbled across this just this morning on pancytopenia. If I understand it correctly, "pancytopenia" must also be listed as a diagnosis to be coded.

    Thanks again!
