    Default Prophylactic Removal of Ovaries

    AAPC: Back to School
My surgeon performed a salpingo-oophorectomy at the same time she did a partial colectomy for a pt with rectal cancer. It was explained to me that if the ovaries were kept, there would be a chance the cancer would spread to them at a later time. Would you code the cancer diag primary or the prophlyactic diag primary for the removal of the tubes and ovaries? The codes I'll be submitting are 44145 & 58720, which can be billed together according to CCI edits.

I don't think you can bill for something that was done incidental to another surgery. For example, you can’t bill for an appendectomy during another procedure because it might cause a problem later.
