Need advice

  1. Question Need advice
    Medical Coding Books
Is it appropriate to us 36140 along with a selective catheter placement code. For example pt is having arteriogram, angioplasty and stent of iliac arteries. The surgeon always codes 36140 for the right femoral artery was assessed using a Mini-Stick kit and then he also codes for the selective catheterization placement. Is this correct or does the selective catheter placement include the initial entry.

Unfortunately, there is not enough information to give an accurate response. Is this a bilateral access? are there bilateral stent placements? are the stent/s placed in the internal or external iliac/s?

If the catheter is advanced into another vessel (selective placement) then he should not bill for the acess (36140), it is included. Catheter selection is always coded the the most distal point in a particular vascular family, all points prior to that distal point are part of that pathway and should not be separately reported.
