Question Hospital setting -What is considered a routine supply

    AAPC: Back to School
Can everyone provide me with their definition of what is considered a routine supply. Here is what we use

The following would be considered non-routine, therefore chargeable

¨ Directly identifiable to the individual patient. Not customarily used for each patient visit.

¨ Furnished at the direction of a physician because of specific medical needs

¨ Either is not reusable or represents a cost for each preparation

¨ Not a personal convenience item

¨ Volume used for a patient significantly greater than normally used.

Flagler Hospital’s Protocol is based upon Medicare’s guidance when identifying chargeable supplies.

I would also love some more information on what is or is not considered routine supplies for hospitals. I use the same guidelines you posted above but would love something more indepth. I found this website really helpful: https://www.oxhp.com/secure/policy/m..._supplies.html
