    Default Surgery Modifier

    AAPC: Back to School
We bill as a group practice to Medicare - one physician took the patient to surgery - two days later another physician took the patient back to surgery as there was some residual lamina causing pain. What modifier would you use 76, 77, or 78?

    Based on your statment...

    76-Repeat proc. by same physician
    77-Repeat proc. by another physician
78-Return to the OR for a related proc. during the post-op (Same MD or different MD)

Assuming the return was related to the surgery, I would suggest mod. 78.
