pt coming in for Dr visit and needs a translator. how do i bill this?? thanks

There is no additional code/fee associated with use of a translator. This should be treated the same as any other patient that presents without the need of a translator.

The HCPCS codes for translators are T1013 and W5023.
Informational letter no. 811 from the State of Iowa gives all the guidelines for billing translation and interpretation services for medicaid patients.
I am not aware of any other carrier that will pay these services.

Your office should have a policy regarding who pays for a translator. Remember if you bill Medicaid for a service you have to bill all other carriers too so when the other carriers deny you will have to bill the patients so make sure they understand your office policy.

I am not sure but I think for sign language your provider may HAVE to pay for the translator.

Also check the Iowa Medical Society web site-they may have some guidance for you.

Good Luck-I have heard that many offices don't bill because the record keeping is too much work.
