Default chemical dependency dx (I need your expertise)

    AAPC: Back to School
the provider coded v65.42 and v65.49 and the constant error message in our EHR says ( Error ID: uPT on line 1 Error Message: Primary ICD-9 not specific, please code Mental Health/Chemical Dependance condition. Please review.)

pretty much I use unspecified chemical dependency dx codes like 305.90 for these types of encounters as primary....is this appropriate given the info in the provider note?

Group Name: CD (chemical dependency) GROUP
    Patient Attendance: attended
    Patient Participation: active
Group Specific Content: the majority of group (7/11) were either in middle recovery or transitioning into late recovery. Topics included family issues, the importance of boundaries w/ family and AOD using peers, healthy intimacy in healthier relationships. Also, 'levelling' introduced as an important tool toward reducing resentment, building confidence as well as a healthy relationship.
Patient Specific Content: active group member.

The provider is receiving an error message due to the fact that a "V" code cannot be the first listed code for a diagnosis on a claim. It may require that you speak with the clinician to educate them regarding this situation, so they can more accurately code out their group sessions appropriately. The specific diagnosis for each member of the group should be identified and supplied by the therapist to bill appropriately.
