intra-operative consult

I think I know the answer but... my physician was called into the OR by a general surgeon to consult on the patients tubes/ovaires that had abcesses. My physician ended up removing the the tubes at that time. She was not an existing patient of our practice.

Can you only charge for the salpingectomies or is there a way to charge for the intra-operative consult in addition?

In my experience the documentation for these types of "consultations" are usually lacking ... after all the patient is sedated and can't be fully examined.

Use the 99499 Unlisted E/M with a -57 modifier for your consultation and decision for surgery.

Obviously you will need to provide notes to support your coding/billing.

    Hope that helps.
