Question Can I bill 88321 x 2 for multiple specimens?

    AAPC: Back to School
I have 2 different slides/specimens sent to our pathologists for 2nd opinion. Should 88321 be reported for each slide? Or is this code only billable 1x since the description reads 'consult & report on referred slides prepared elsewhere'.

    Thanks for your help!

I believe the rule of thumb is to only charge one 88321 per accession number being consulting on. So if the two specimens came from two different accession numbers; then you can charge for two 88321 (AMA guidelines). Medicare however, only permits billing one unit per patient per consultation.
