Default Need Help with an ICD-9-CM Code........

    AAPC: Back to School
I am a new coder (CPC-A) and I am looking for help with an ICD-9-CM code. The only info I have is "Fever, Unspecified. Most consistent with Otitis Media, Bilaterally. I tried 780.60 but that is wrong. Any suggestions?

A fever is integral to otitis media right.. so you shouldn't have to code the fever. Just code the otitis media as 382.9 I believe. I may be wrong so no promises, but see if that may be right. Hope I have helped! Let me know if I was right or wrong please! Goodluck!

If the fever is due to the otitis media, then you don't need to code it because it is a symptom. But 780.60 is what I use for an unspecified fever.
Please correct me if I'm wrong. ^_^

I am not sure why you say 780.60 for fever is wrong. That is the correct code.

If coding for a physician's office, the phrase "most consistent with..." is the same as "possible, maybe, could be, probably, suspect etc". These statements are not considered confirmed DX so you would code the presenting symptom which would be the fever, 780.60

Thanks Guys I'll let you know but the 780.60 was a "kick back" as an invalid code. Not sure why

780.60 is a valid code, your system may have an edit to "kick back" unspecified codes, if so you need to speak with administration to have the edit removed. You can and sometimes should use unspecified codes.

Default Otis Media dx from ER

If a pt. Comes from the ER to another facility with dx.of otitis media with a rx. Maintenance at the second facility should 382.9 be coded still when the attending at the second facility agrees with the diagnosis.
