Fracture Care

Could someone clear something up for me, as I have received conficting reports. If a doc sees a patient and orders x-rays that confirm a fracture, but does nothing and plans to do nothing to treat the fracture except limiting the patient's activity, pain meds, etc; can a fracture care be billed in addition to the E/M code for the visit?

    Thanks.

No doc cannot bill fracture care because fracture care includes 90 days of normal, uncomplicated, follow-up care and if he is not planning on doing anything further for this patient then I would say no.
If he did a splint or cast application then yes I would but for doing nothing I would not bill for that.

Is there a difference in this scenario if the physician plans to follow up on the patient?

Yes, if that was the first initial evaluation of the fx and he plans on following up on the patient within the 90 day global period.
