    Question Vaccine question
    New Call-to-action
    Good Afternoon~

A question was brought to my attention today... Can an unused vaccine be billed? I've never heard of such but I thought I'd ask to see if anyone else has.

Patient was seen for a well visit and a vaccine was drawn up but prior to administration the parent refused the vaccine. Due to the vaccine not being used after being drawn the vaccine had to be disposed of. Is it possible to bill the insurance for the vaccine since it can no longer be used even though it was not administered to the patient? If so how would I go about doing so.

    Thanks in advance,
    Cheryl, CPC-A

No since the patient was not queried prior to drawing up the vaccine as to whether they would consent to it. If you have that the patient did consent to the vaccine and then declines you might have a good case to bill it however you would need really great documentation to support this.
