Default help psyche consult in ed

    AAPC: Back to School
If psychiatry is consulted in the ER and then that same day or next day the patient is admitted to mental health ward...should the psyche doc charge an admit(ex.99221) consult(99241 or 99281) or the psyche eval code 90801...

If your admit is on a diff. day then, you can bill the consult. & the Admit Depending on ins. you would bill your consult code.& admit code.If the admit is on the same day as your consult then you only bill the admit. YOU CANNOT BILL BOTH. See page 8 of the 2011 cpt-coding expert under Initial Hospital Care about the 3rd paragraph on the right it states: When pt is admitted to hosp in the course of an encounter in another site of serv.(ED;observation; nursing facility etc.) all evaluation and management serv. provided in conjunction w/that admission are considered to be part of the initial hospital care when performed on the same day.... Hope this helps.:-)

Patient is seen in ER and a psychiatric consult is requested. An APRN from the psychiatric department then sees the patient and bills a 90801. Later that same day, the patient is admitted to the psychiatric department.

    1. Since the request for consult was not directly to this APRN, can a service be billed?

    2. Should the 90801 be billed for acute onsets?

    3. If the patient is admitted that day to the psychiatric department, can the 90801 AND the admit code both be billed?
