V Code Sequencing

  1. Default V Code Sequencing
    Medical Coding Books
Can a primary V code such as V714 be coded before a chronic condition, such as hypertension, which has been listed by the doctor in the diagnosis. The patient comes into the ER after an car accident with no injuries, but the doctor also list the hypertension in the diagnosis.

    Sequence
    V7189
    4019

I thought only other V and E codes could be sequenced after a V code. What is the rule for this type of scenario.

    Thanks for the help

V71.xx codes are first listed only allowed. So in the case you have listed it would be V71.4 listed first with the HTN second.
